Brought to Europe in 1805 from Souther China, mandarin (citrus madurensis) has often been referred to as the _little heart of the sun_, it reawakens the sense of joy. 1872 for Men purveys the amalgamation of mandarin, pepper, petit grain (citrus aurantium) and clary sage, obtained from the distillation of _salvia officinalis_, a northern mediterranean herb known by the Romans as _herba sacra_, the sacred herb.
