Brought to Europe in 1805 from Souther China, mandarin (citrus madurensis) has often been referred to as the ’little heart of the sun’, it reawakens the sense of joy. 1872 for Men purveys the amalgamation of mandarin, pepper, petit grain (citrus aurantium) and clary sage, obtained from the distillation of ’salvia officinalis’, a northern mediterranean herb known by the Romans as ’herba sacra’, the sacred herb.
